Patented colour reference slide that mimics human tissue when stained
The colour of tissue stains and contrast between these stains is used in the diagnosis of cancer cells. To ensure consistency of colour for digitally scanned images, FFEI developed a novel and patented colour-profiling technology – the Sierra slide.
The Sierra slide carriers over 50 bio cellular patches, which mimic human tissue, impregnated with various histological stains. The spectral absorption of commonly used pathology stains is then measured using a high-precision spectrophotometer. This process captures the ‘ground-truth’ colour of the different stained patches, which can then be compared to those reproduced by a scanner.

Out of the Box
For those just starting to assess the colour accuracy of your digital pathology images, the Sierra slide comes part of the Sierra VS-Analyser and Sierra VS-Profiler product packages. Used in combination you will be able to analyse any given WSI device, understand any variance that exists and generate a unique ICC profile to ensure these are colour calibrated.
Whether you have integrated Sierra technology into your workflows yourselves or in collaboration with FFEI’s specialist consultants, Sierra slides can be purchased to ensure all devices are calibrated to ICC standards – whether at production or servicing in the field.
